Özet

Wind energy is emerging as a key sustainable solution in an era of rising demand for fossil fuels and pressing environmental concerns, offering cleaner alternatives. This transition is not only a technological shift, but also a crucial adaptation to address the challenges of the growing global population and the impact of climate change. A thorough understanding of wind physics and atmospheric dynamics is essential to unlock the full potential of wind energy, facilitating the enhancement of technologies and the realization of investments in this renewable sector. Furthermore, the properties of wind speed and its direction play an important role in estimating the potential, deciding the properties of wind turbines, micrositing wind turbines, building a wind farm, and predicting electricity generation afterward. Reflecting on the historical evolution of wind energy, from its early origins with wind turbines to modern turbines, reveals a journey of remarkable innovations. From its early origins with wind turbines to modern turbines, the evolution of wind energy reflects a remarkable journey catalyzed by important innovations. In 2024, wind energy accounts for more than 7.2% of global electricity production, supported by significant technological advances, political incentives, and economic momentum. With a view to the future, emerging trends, such as floating wind farms, hybrid systems, and predictive maintenance led by AI, will be transformed, reaffirming the central role of wind energy in the formation of a sustainable future. This chapter discusses wind and related meteorological variables, properties of the atmospheric boundary layer, wind statistics, micrositing rules, wind energy fundamentals, and environmental effects related to wind energy in detail.
