We estimate that the economists publish much less than their colleagues in natural sciences, health and engineering disciplines even after we control for the quality of the publications. A possible explanation for the poor performance of economists is that the journals specialized in economics have a smaller capacity.

The academic ranking of the universities requires aggregation of performances over all academic fields. A dean compares the academic performance of a chemist and an economist for a tenure or a promotion decision. An NSF grant officer evaluates the publication records of a mathematician and a physicist.
