Özet

Foundry sand is consumed large amounts by manufacturing industries such as car manufacturing, iron-steel industries, alloy production and various branches of metallurgy industry. After the molding process, the material is considered as waste and stockpiled. Ever increasing stockpiling costs is becoming a concern in molding industry; hence, manufacturers are looking for a suitable way of utilization. The aim of this study is to use waste foundry sand in highway constructions where high volumes of the material may be utilized. The steps of the study are as follows; firstly, each group of material is tested to determine index properties. Then, each group of the material compacted using various compaction efforts. Stabilization is considered to increase the strength of material and the sand is stabilized with cement and lime by 2%, 4%, 8%, and 10% by weight. Stabilized samples are later cured for 7-day, 14-day, and 28-day to observe the effect of stabilization by ultrasonic pulse velocity test (UT), unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test, and California bearing ratio (CBR) test.
