Özet

Coke is a porous substance with a high carbon concentration. During the production of coke, wastewater containing harmful organic and inorganic pollutants is generated. When the coking wastewater is discharged into a water body without treatment, it increases toxicity, lowers DO, settles suspended particulates, elevates temperature, and causes oil slicks. This chapter introduces the treatment solutions for coke oven wastewater. The available methods were classified as physicochemical, biological, and advanced oxidation processes. While biological treatment is frequently recommended for eliminating organic contaminants at a low cost, the presence of hazardous pollutants such as phenol, cyanide, and other chemicals is problematic for microorganisms. To reduce the toxicity of coking wastewater, integrated advanced treatment employing a physicochemical–biochemical combination approach is required.
