Özet

Mental imagery plays an important role in the creative process of design thinking. This study explores the nature of mental imagery in design thinking through thematic analysis of interviews with fourteen interaction designers. Findings are grouped into six main themes that explain the nature of mental imagery in design, techniques, and strategies adopted by designers; contextual differences that affect the use of imagery, impact of previous experiences on imagery, using imagery in collaboration with stakeholders; and, finally, the challenges and limitations of using imagery in a work environment. We had similar findings with previous studies on how mental imagery works in design, as well as several new concepts. Finally, we discussed the practical use of imagery and the conflict between the implicit nature of mental imagery and the analytical reasoning approach that is prioritized in a work setting. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of mental imagery in design and its use in professional practice.
