Özet

In order to achieve fine grained sintered products, 0.1 wt% MgO was doped into alumina powders. Magnesium nitrate [Mg(NO3)2. 6H 2O] with the amount of corresponding the requisite MgO content was added to alumina and the slurry was prepared in ethanol medium. After ball milling and drying, the powders were heated to 750 °C for 1 h in air to decompose magnesium nitrate to magnesia. Doped alumina powders were sintered by using spark plasma sintering under a vacuum with especially high heating rates (120 and 200°C/min). Characterization studies on hardness, density and microstructure were carried out on the sintered specimens. The effects of two heating rates on microstructure, density and hardness of spark plasma sintered alumina ceramics were investigated.
