The application of coal-water slurry technology to turkish bituminous coal

Utilization of Turkish bituminous coals for the application of CWS (Coal-Water Slurry) technology is covered by this study. The factors related with slurry preparation and combustion, such as viscosity, stability, atomization and combustion properties of slurry were investigated on Turkish coal sample taken from Zonguldak-Armutçuk. The results of viscosity and stability experiments showed that the suitable coal water slurries were obtained using 0.3% PSS (Sodium Polly Strene Sulphonate) and 0.01 % CMC-Na (Carboxyl Methyl Cellulose, sodium salt) by weight as chemical additives to control the rheology and stability of CWSs. According to atomization studies, The effect of air flows rate on spray quality are more dominant compared to slurry flow rate. By increasing the air flow rates from 20 psi to 100 psi, the droplet size (D50) could be pull down from 100 micron to 50 micron for slurry therefore the slurry flow rate has no effect on spray quality and the finer atomization conditions. On the other hand the slurries are required the higher A/F ratios for fine atomization. At the end of this study, combustion experiments were performed with CWSs prepared from Zonguldak bituminous coal in pilot type down fired coal combustor. Combustion efficiency, and O₂, CO, SO₂, NO _x emissions in the combustion medium and gas emissions in the flue gas were determined.
