Speculative Futures in Classroom Design: Exploring the integration of spatial computing technologies through design fiction

Özet

The integration of spatial computing technologies into educational settings presents unique possibilities for reimagining classroom environments. Although the use of these technologies in education is increasing, architectural approaches that facilitate the integration of spatial technologies into physical and digital educational places remain limited. This study explores how speculative design methods can assist architecture students in envisioning future educational settings with spatial computing technologies integration. A structured workshop titled "The Classroom of the Future" is conducted with third-year architecture students who created speculative narratives and video prototypes through brainstorming, storytelling, visualization, hands-on experience and discussion sessions. Our research indicates that design fiction as a speculative method is a creative medium for designing future classrooms while promoting critical discussions about ethical and socio-technical issues. This study contributes to architectural education and practice in the field of future design studies by outlining a methodology for envisioning spatial computing technologies integrated future classroom settings.
