KARCIĞAR VE GERDANİYE KÖÇEK TAKIMLARINDA YEREL TÜRLER

In Turkish makam music, köçek refers both to an independent piece performed for dancing and to verbal and instrumental genres arranged one after the other like a suite. The notebook containing Gerdaniye and Karcığar köçek suites was written down by Udi Nevres Bey between 1905-1907, as quoted by Lavtacı Andon Efendi, is located in IBB (İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality) Atatürk Library under the inverntory number k. 11, LKE_F000082. In our study, the local genres performed instrumentally in köçek suites are discussed and their makam characteristics as well as especially their usul (rhythm cycle) and motif contents are analysed. The aim of the study is to reveal the structural characteristics of the identified local genres in terms of makam, usul and motifs along with their brief definitions in terms of belonging. This aims to prevent the genres from being lost in the generalisations of ‘aranağme’ and ‘saz’. In addition, Nevres Bey's performance notes in the köçek suites are given and important information on how to perform the köçekçes is mentioned. As a result, it has been seen that the performance practice of the köçek suits and the importance of the place of the local genres identified in them in the Turkish makam music tradition and that some genres have survived or disappeared in line with natural selection or preferences.
