Özet

Flame stabilization with the help of a stable vortex is used in many combustion systems and especilly in gas turbine combustors. Such flows are also used in chemical processes in order to enhance heat and mass transfer. In order to establish the desired swirl pattern flow is passed through a swirl vane providing it with tangential momentum. In this study, flow past a swirl vane designed such that its siwrl number would be adjusted to 0.74, and reaching to a sudden expansion is examined with the particle image velocimetry technique. Seed particle density within the flow changes considerably from one region to another within the flow due tor everse flows and other complexities of the flow under investigation resulting in poor signal to noise ratio. For this reason, when calculating the velocity vectors average cross correlation is taken and mean vectors are computed from the peak point of this averaged cross correlation. As a consequence of measurements a stable re-circulation zone is observed just downstream of the flame holder center body. Moreover secondary weak re-circulation zones are observed either side of the jet flow due to sudden expansion. Due to these flow stuructures in can be concluded that the flame may be held in a stable manner for the reacting flow case.
