Özet

The purpose of the paper is to evaluate stability of a ship in waves. The ship is assumed to satisfy the IMO stability standards and in such conditions the work of the upsetting moments due to the wind and waves was calculated and compared with the work done by the ship's righting moment at a given angle of heel. The difference between the two works is the stability margin that is used to assess ship stability safety in waves. To predict the effect of the upsetting moments in terms of the roll angle, a nonlinear roll motion equation has been set up and solved. A procedure for calculating the terms of the equation has also been suggested. The calculated stability margin can be used as a relative measure of stability safety of ships rolling in waves.
