Özet
Purpose – This study aims to investigate the impact of fiber cross-section shapes and filament count on the moisture management properties of nylon 6 single jersey fabrics. Design/methodology/approach – Eight samples were produced using round, hollow, dogbone, trilobal cross-section yarns and yarns with different filament counts. The research examines how these structural differences affect moisture absorption, drying performance, air and water vapor permeability. Findings – The results revealed that fiber cross-section significantly affects fabric porosity, which in turn influences moisture absorption rates. Hollow fibers, with their internal voids, enhanced moisture wicking, while trilobal and dogbone fibers increased air and water vapor permeability due to their unique shapes. Additionally, an increase in filament count improved moisture absorption, as a higher number of filaments created more channels for moisture transport. Research limitations/implications – Only fabrics made from nylon 6 fibers with yarns of four different cross-sections and five different filament counts were tested. Practical implications – Understanding the interplay between yarn geometry and filament structure is crucial for optimizing moisture control in performance fabrics such as activewear, outdoor gear and technical textiles requiring enhanced breathability and moisture control. Originality/value – This study provides a unique contribution by systematically analyzing how both fiber cross-section shapes and filament count impact the moisture management performance of nylon 6 single jersey fabrics.
