Effects of B4C addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of hot pressed SiC ceramic matrix composites

Özet

The effect of B4C addition on microstructural and mechanical properties of the SiC-B4C powder composites were investigated after high energy milling and hot pressing. In the present work, SiC powders containing 5wt%, 10wt%, 15wt% B4C were mechanically alloyed in a high energy ball mill for 8 h. Microstructural characterization investigations (SEM, XRD) were carried out on mechanically alloyed powder mixtures and on composites sintered at 2100°C for 1 hour in vacuum at 50 MPa. Mechanical properties were characterized by hardness tests, three point bending strength tests and Charpy impact tests for different compositions. Significant increases in hardness and bending strength values were observed due to B4C addition.
