Özet

Infrastructure capacity is a critical aspect of achieving a sustainable and robust economic development for all nations. New investment plans and design of new bridges and tunnels still continue around dense urban settlements and cities. Construction activities should be in compliance with the required standards and specifications as part of sustainable infrastructure development. Major infrastructure construction projects had to overcome difficult challenges in densely populated urban areas. Infrastructure projects in Istanbul were also designed for a service life of minimum 100 years and, required careful selection of materials, production techniques and their quality control and assurance measures. Planning stage of the quality documents and procedures, as well as the laboratory and site quality control and assurance practices required carefully planned preconstruction activities. Quality control measures were considered based on the availability and the technical conformity of the local materials subjected to local environmental conditions. The critical mechanisms taken into account were early age cracking, chloride and carbonation induced corrosion, freeze-thaw damage, alkali-aggregate reaction, delayed ettringite formation and chemical attack. Therefore, quality assurance test methods and limits for constituents were pre-tested in advance of construction. These measures required intensive full scale testing in order to align the construction methods with the design service life expectation of the projects. Measures such as inspection sections of constituents for traceability and, in-situ quality monitoring of concrete by microstructural analysis were applied during the construction.
