Determination of geotechnical properties of sand-EPS foam and cement mixtures

Özet

With the developments in geotechnical engineering, it has been found that lightweight fills are cost beneficial for some applications such as embankments, slope stability and retaining walls. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam is widely used in low strength and soft soil construction as a lightweight fill material. Lightweight fill mixture which is composed of EPS, cement and sand are used in laboratory tests such as unconfined compressive tests, CBR (California Bearing Ratio) and permeability experiments to determine its properties. To determine the appropriate ratio for the material mixture; different percentages of EPS material such as 100, 75, 50 and 25 were tested. As a result, it was found that a mixture containing cement, polystyrene foam and sand, can be successfully used in some applications such as improvement of slopes and reducing the weight of embankments.
