N2 - Tunnel construction works include hard working conditions and occupational hazards such as crystalline silica and cement dust, noise and vibration, diesel engine exhaust, chemical vapours, radon and oxygen-deficient atmospheres. The construction of tunnels requires a great deal of physical effort. The need for heavy manual labour can be reduced by mechanization, but mechanization brings its own hazards. Large and powerful mobile machines in a confined environment generate dust, noise, vibration and diesel exhaust. Principal sources of noise include pneumatic drills and hammers, diesel engines and fans. Due to the nature of underground work, protection against noise depends mostly on the personal protection of hearing. In this study noise measurements were carried out with the RION NL - 31 integrating sound level meter in Istanbul Metro Tunnel Drivages. Tunnel construction workers were divided into six occupational groups performing similar tasks in similar working conditions. These are drilling crew; hydraulic hammer operators, truck operators, loader operators, shotcreting operators; support workers. The highest noise levels were determined during the drilling, excavation, loading and transportation processes. The results and the discussion of the noise measurements made in the tunnel drivages within Istanbul Metro Project, is the main concern of this paper.
