Özet
This paper aims to examine the utilization of some alternative energy resources onboard such as solar power, wind power, and battery systems. The analyses in the relevant literature regarding these strategies are evaluated and the advantages and disadvantages of each system are presented. Moreover, comprehensive findings on the use of renewable energy resources onboard in both standalone applications and within different hybrid propulsion configurations are shared. The hybrid power configurations are addressed and discussed. As a result of the paper, it is observed that solar power is suitable as an additional energy source while wind power and battery systems can support the main propulsion power. While battery systems can provide sufficient power in some short-distance ferries, solar and wind power are not enough to meet the energy needs of oceangoing merchant ships. Nevertheless, it is understood that each technology contributes to the environmentand energy-related regulation of the IMO.
