Özet

This study examines the factors influencing primary school children’s perception of urban space, with a particular focus on the role of socio-economic structures. Data were collected from fourth-grade students, with an average age of 10, attending primary schools in ten neighborhoods with varying socio-economic levels. The data were analyzed using factor analysis, MANOVA, and regression techniques. The findings identify seven key dimensions shaping children’s urban space perception: (1) environmental quality and comfort, (2) natural environment, (3) basic needs and special meeting places, (4) freedom of play and activity, (5) outdoor use, (6) safety and vitality, and (7) belonging and inclusion. MANOVA results indicate that while socio-economic disparities have a limited overall effect, significant differences are observed in the “environmental quality” and “comfort and natural environment” dimensions. Regression analyses demonstrate that environmental quality and comfort, freedom of play and activity, basic needs and special meeting places, natural environment, and belonging and inclusion are key determinants in perceiving a neighborhood as a “good place for children.” Environmental quality and comfort, along with belonging and inclusion, are the primary factors that mitigate children’s inclination to relocate. These findings suggest that, beyond the physical environment and socio-economic status, parental attitudes, safety concerns, technological advancements, and social ties significantly shape children’s urban space experiences. The study highlights the necessity of further research with larger sample sizes and longitudinal designs to inform the planning and development of child-friendly urban environments.
