A strategic management perspective and sustainability of smart port facilities in Turkey

The growing demand for a sustainable balance in maritime trade, encompassing economic, social, and environmental aspects, necessitates transparent assessments, improved governance, scientific collaboration, and stakeholder communication. These actions are vital for crafting practical strategies in line with sustainable development goals. By employing a strategic management perspective, we aim to reshape capacity planning by highlighting critical port capabilities and the factors influencing the decisions of Port Authorities (PAs) regarding future capacity. This study examines the obstacles hindering the evolution of smart maritime ports in Turkey through a strategic management and sustainability perspective, emphasising the integration of environmental, social, and economic dimensions. By identifying and analysing key barriers such as technological limitations, regulatory constraints, and stakeholder engagement challenges, this research provides actionable insights for policymakers to foster the advancement of smart port facilities aligned with sustainable development goals. In addition, implications for Turkish ports show how to overcome these challenges. The findings aim to enhance Turkey's competitiveness in the global maritime sector by promoting efficient, sustainable, and strategically managed port operations.
