Özet

Istanbul Technical University Cavitation Tunnel (ITUKAT) is a large cavitation tunnel that became operational by the end of 2021. Ranking seventh worldwide in terms of flow rate, ITUKAT features a large test section with dimensions of 5.5 m × 1.5 m × 1.2 m (Length x Width x Height) and a maximum flow velocity of 16.5 m/s. Powered by a 1 MW electric motor, the tunnel offers enhanced functionality for testing all types of propellers and conducting hydrodynamic experiments. Key features include a uniform flow, low turbulence and acoustic noise, pressurization/depressurization functionality and cutting-edge measurement instruments. Since its commissioning, ITUKAT has supported numerous national projects and international research initiatives. This paper highlights ITUKAT’s significance by presenting its capabilities through benchmark tests, uncertainty analysis and an overview of its characteristics. The flow characteristics of the test section were evaluated in terms of flow homogeneity and turbulence intensities, measured at different planes by using a Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV). Systematic open-water performance experiments were conducted for DTMB-5415 US Navy Combatant and King’s College (KCD) KCD-193 propeller models. Uncertainty analysis was performed for the DTMB-5415 open-water tests in accordance with ITTC guidelines, ensuring the accuracy and repeatability of the measurements. Looking forward, ITUKAT aims to advance next-generation maritime technologies, focusing on energy-efficient propulsion systems and innovative naval designs aligned with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) greenhouse gas reduction goals. ITUKAT’s capabilities promise significant advancements in engineering, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of maritime research.
