Özet

The Akşehir fault is one of the most important faults reflecting internal deformation of the Anatolian block. Small to medium magnitude earthquakes due to this fault are known from both historical and instrumental records. The last earthquake was aearly in 2002 (Mw=6.2) and it resulted in structural damage and loss of life. The surface deformations were mapped and paleoseismological studies were performed on the rupture with the aid of trenches to obtain data about the characteristics of the Akşehir fault. Two surface ruptures, which have formed in Maltepe village and Çay town due to normal faulting, are named as the Maltepe and Çay segments. A maximum vertical offset of 30 cm was measured on the Çay segment and one of 25 cm was measured on the Maltepe segment. The paleoseismological studies suggested that a previous earthquake had occurred on the Maltepe segment later than AD 1150, while the Çay segment had ruptured before AD 760 with nearly similar magnitudes. These results indicate that the Maltepe and the Çay segments have different earthquake histories. There are other unbroken segments on the Akşehir fault which produce similar or smaller magnitude earthquakes.
