Abstract
This study examines the electric power distribution systems and architectures used in the developing concepts of Electric Aircraft (EA), More Electric Aircraft (MEA), and Hybrid Electric Aircraft (HEA) within the aviation industry. First, the concepts of MEA, HEA, and EA are discussed, along with their development since their inception. The advantages and disadvantages of the arrangement of the electric power distribution system within the aircraft are presented. Subsequently, different topologies used in electric power distribution systems are compared based on reliability, weight, cost, and maintainability. These topology architectures are analyzed in terms of the use of AC and DC voltages at different levels and the effects of system frequency. In addition, the use of electrical power distribution topologies in the new generation of aircrafts in service is discussed. Lastly, popular architectures of electric propulsion systems are examined. Based on the outcomes obtained from the study, the current and future state of aircraft electric power systems are discussed.
