Abstract

Hooks are used to safely handle and lift the loads in cranes. The optimisation of hooks with appropriate selection of shape and material enables the increase of value of loading capacity. In this study, the application of curved beam theory to the simple hooks, which are used as a load handling element in cranes and hoisting machines, is presented. Based on DIN 15401, both approximate method and exact method as an application of curved beam theory are investigated. An illustrative example is given to compare the stress results obtained by approximate and exact methods.
