Abstract
Surface miners are an important alternative to conventional quarrying methods for cement raw materials. A research project of Istanbul Technical University involved an investigation of their usability for limestone and marl in the raw material deposits of the Nub cement plant. Firstly, the physical and mechanical properties of the limestone and marl samples were determined. In order to obtain an improved design process, the linear cutting test method was introduced. To enable the use of this method for large blocks of stone, a test rig was built with financial assistance from NATO. A test program using a conical bit with an optimum depth of cut and different bit spacing was carried out on the limestone block samples. During each test the cutting forces and the specific energy values were measured. The results were then analysed in order to estimate the production capacity of the individual continuously working surface miners.
