Abstract
In the next generation mobile communication technologies, providing service to users far from terrestrial base stations by using non-terresterial networks (NTNs) is purposed. Components to be used in NTN for this purpose cause high mobility problem and make the studies on this problem important. In recent years, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), one of the NTN components, as base stations has gained popularity. This situation makes essential studies on handover (HO) and coverage in networks using UAVs. In this study, HO rate and coverage area analysis are performed on a mobility model using a UAV base station. It is investigated whether the connection between the users and the base stations is line of sight. Then, the path loss and shadowing fading values are calculated according to the connection type. Moreover, the number of connections made by users to base the stations is examined for different UAV altitudes. Since more realistic calculations are used in the analyzes which are made within the scope of the study, more realistic results are obtained about the optimum UAV altitude. Also, since the results of the analysis made from three different perspectives which are number of connections, HO ratio and coverage probability, are combined; more realistic results about optimum UAV altitude are obtained.
