Abstract
In this study on tunnel lighting, a new lighting system was designed using high power LED lamps in an urban road tunnel. The automated LED lamp lighting system features a stepped lighting design created to provide variable luminance values. The study confirmed that the LED lamp lighting design conformed to the luminance values specified by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE088: 2004). An urban tunnel in Istanbul was chosen to compare the energy efficiency change in cases of the high pressure sodium (vapour) lamps and the high power LED lamps using for tunnel lighting. The LED lamps were found to conserve 45.5 % more energy than the high- pressure sodium (vapour) lamps.
