Abstract

This chapter is the result of long research regarding the relation between popular music and the mey in Turkey. The research to date has charted the cultural and historical role of the mey and attempts at innovation and its integration into professional musical life. The goals of this paper are twofold: The first is to introduce the mey as an instrument, and the second is to recognize its status within Turkish popular music.
