Abstract

From studies of phase relationships in the Y-Si-Al-O-N system a series of Sm2O3-densified alpha-beta multiphase ceramic materials have been prepared by pressureless sintering. This paper describes the densification behaviour and reaction sequence in compositions designed to produce different amounts of alpha-sialon in the final product. The effect of added Y2O3 on the sinterability, final phase composition and bend strength of Sm2O3-densified alpha-beta sialons has also been investigated. The relationship between alpha-sialon content, hardness and strength of these materials is discussed in some detail.
