Abstract

Textured La2Zr2O7, Gd2O3, and Er2O3 were studied as buffer layer materials for long length YBCO coated conductors. Buffer layers were grown on Ni tapes using La, Zr, Gd, and Er organometallic compounds which were dissolved into solvents to obtain smooth films via a non-vacuum, reel-to-reel sol-gel process. Films were annealed at 900°C-1200°C under a flowing 4%H2-Ar gas mixture. The buffer layers were characterized by ESEM, EDS, XRD, and DTA. It was found that textured, continuous, crack- and pinhole-free La2Zr2O7, Gd2O3, and Er2O3 buffer layers were obtained.
