Abstract
In this study, the effect of different open-closing timing of intake ports and port area of the Wankel engine on the engine performance and emissions were investigated experimentally at part-load. In the experiments, the latest generation of 13B - MSP (Multi-Side Port) Renesis Wankel engine that produced by Mazda Company was used. This engine was selected among other rotary engines because it is a new generation engine suitable for the use of the measuring instruments and its parts can be supplied easily. Normally, the 13B-MSP Wankel engine has two rotors and three intake manifolds, which are called; primary, secondary and auxiliary, ports, respectively. The three intake ports are activated depend on engine speed. In the test engine, which has been converted from two rotors to single-rotor, research engine has two intake ports. One of them is secondary and other one auxiliary port (Closing later). Experiments were carry out under the same load and speed conditions for both ports. Performance, emissions and cylinder pressure values were compared according to the engine results. According to obtained results, secondary intake port was better for brake specific fuel consumption while NO and THC emissions were less when the auxiliary port was selected. Also, the results were obtained by measuring the pressure inside the cylinder with different sensors and methods. Purpose: Investigation of the effect of intake ports on performance and emissions under different conditions in the Wankel engine. Theory and Methods: Conversion from two rotors to single-rotor research engine has two intake ports, establishment of experimental setup and extraction of the indicator diagram. Results: According to obtained results, secondary intake port was better for brake specific fuel consumption while NO and THC emissions were less when the auxiliary port was selected. Conclusion: The effects on performance and emissions are examined of secondary and auxiliary ports at part loads in the single-rotor Wankel test engine.
