Abstract
Each day, the importance of sustainability increases as natural sources decrease because of various human-based or nature-based causes. Using fewer chemicals, recycling, and reusing byproducts and end products are important strategies for being sustainable. From this point of view, natural dyestuffs are good choices for replacing synthetic dyestuffs that harm the environment. Natural dyestuffs are advantageous for being nonhazardous, relatively cheaper, and easy to extract from natural sources; they have various characteristics and colors; and their production methods can be selected according to the needs of customers and sustainability. In this chapter, preferred natural dyestuffs, their sources and properties, their production methods, and their various levels of sustainability are examined, and new approaches are evaluated according to the results of the latest studies. In addition, a new sustainable dyestuff extraction study is prepared and reported for dyeing cotton fabrics.
