Abstract
In this study, the principles of chemical precipitation of sulfate which is based on the formation of ettringite, a double salt with the formula Ca3Al2O6.3CaSO4.32H4O are evaluated. The Al2(SO4)3-Ca(OH)2-H2O system is chosen to study the equilibrium equations for ettringite precipitation. The residual sulfate concentrations are below 200 mg/1 in pH values above 10,5 indicating that ettringite precipitation can be employed as an alternative treatment process for the removal of sulfate ions.
