Abstract

Subsolidus phase relationships in the systems Ln-Si-Al-O-N where Ln = Nd and Sm have been determined. Forty-four compatibility tetrahedra were established in the region Ln2O3-Si3N4-AlN-Al2O3. Within this region, LnAlO3 and M′-phase (Ln2Si3. xAlxO3 + xN4 - x) are the only two important compounds which have tie lines joined to β-sialon and AlN polytypoid phases. α-Sialon coexists with the M′ phase.
