Abstract

In this study, production and characterization of a small scale fused MgO ingot has been reported. Smelting work was done in a 270 kVA laboratory type DC electric arc furnace. Sintered MgO obtained from natural magnesite was used as a raw material in the fusion process. The fusion process and subsequent slow cooling generated discrete zones in the electro-fused ingot. Different samples taken from the appeared zones were characterized by using XRD, EDS, SEM and optical microscope. Chemical composition, crystal size and bulk density of these samples was also investigated.
