Abstract

In the design of buildings that provide high energy performance; climatic conditions, cost and technical issues should be taken into consideration together. In this study, the energy analysis of the LEED SILVER (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified Erzurum Technical University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture building in Erzurum, one of the provinces located in the severe cold regions of Turkey, was performed, and it was evaluated whether the building reached the energy performance foreseen in the project phase during the operation period. Moreover, an evaluation was conducted comparing the adherence to Turkish Thermal Insulation Standards in the construction of identical buildings, considering their energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and economic factors. First, the energy simulation of the existing LEED SILVER certified building was performed and compared with the actual situation, and the difference between energy consumption was found to be 7.3 %. The analyses were conducted using HAP 5.11 (Hourly Analysis Program). It has been determined that the education building with LEED SILVER certificate is built according to national standards, it is advantageous in terms of energy efficiency by 23% and CO2 emission by 16,5%. Within the scope of the LEED SILVER Certificate criteria, the expenditure of $ 1153458,88 for the reference building will be amortized after 2 years and 7 months. However, the square meter unit cost of construction is on average 3% higher than another educational building built according to national standards on the university campus. These results can be accepted as guiding parameters in energy efficient building design.
