Abstract

We have studied the slip casting of binary systems consisting of Al 2O3 and SiC ceramic powders. The uniformity of ceramic powder mixtures and slip cast systems in the green and sintered states were quantified with color measurements of L, a* and b*. Our results show that the a* and b* parameters varied widely from samples consisting of pure Al2O3 that were white and pure SiC that were black. Intimate mixing of the ceramic powders, such as obtained in a high energy planetary ball mill, was important to produce homogeneous green and sintered compacts.
