Abstract

The present weather criteria (IS criteria of IMO) for the ships is based on energy balance between beam wind heeling and righting moments with roll motion taken into account through the initial condition which due to ad hoc assumptions can not explicitly take into consideration of roll dynamics and roll damping. Thus, the present criterion can not explain the nature of capsizing of ships. In this study, the importance of damping moment on safety of vessel has been presented by Safe basin, integrity curves and Unit energy-Time graphics. It has been also shown by using the integrity and safe basin graphics that 30 percent erosion occurrence at the fundamental safe basin causes claw formation to starts to cover the entire safe basin, leaving the safe zone extremely limited. Thus, using the thirty percent erosion at the fundamental safe basin as a limit of erosion an alternative for the IS Code can be developed for the transverse stability of the ships.
