Abstract

The behavior of Pt atoms deposited on Ge(001), after annealing at temperatures >1000 K was studied using STM and STS. The formation of one-dimensional, defect-free, metallic nanowires with high aspect ratios was observed. A tentative atomistic model for the NWs as well as the newly formed β terraces was proposed.
