Abstract

The present paper presents the results of foundation performance case histories of structures founded on liquefiable soils in İskenderun-Hatay following the Kahramanmaras-Pazarcık (Mw=7.7) and Elbistan (Mw=7.6) Earthquakes. In the field investigations, it has been observed that most of the structures built in these liquefiable areas were subjected to structural damage including rotation, settlement, or total collapse. As a part of a preliminary assessment, the foundation performance of some selected structures founded on liquefiable soils was analyzed in terms of the settlement, and load load-bearing capacity by using the methodologies in the literature. The results of the study showed that foundation characteristics significantly governed the liquefaction-induced building settlement during Kahramanmaras Earthquakes. Additionally, preliminary bearing capacity computations indicated that for foundations where the post-liquefaction bearing capacity factor of safety is below 1.0, the liquefaction-induced building settlements increase significantly and reach excessive values.
