Abstract

Very high molecular weight poly(vinylamine) was prepared by a modified Hofmann rearrangement of poly(acrylamide). The reaction was carried out in ethylene glycol using the monosodium salt of this solvent and bromine instead of sodium hypohalogenides in the original Hofmann rearrangement. Poly(vinyl 2-hydroxyethylurethane) was formed as an intermediate product. Hydrolysis of the latter gave poly(vinylamine) with quantitative conversions.
