Abstract

2-3.5 mol% Y2O3 stabilized submicron ZrO2 (Y-TZP) based composites with an addition of 20, 32 and 40vol% WC particle reinforcement were produced by hot-pressing at sintering temperatures of 1450 °C and 1550 °C. Mechanical and structural properties were observed according to WC vol%, stabilizer content and sintering temperature. Phase transformations were investigated by XRD observations. The density, fracture toughness and hardness of the pure 3Y-TZP matrix were enhanced by the bi-modal sized WC inclusions. 40vol% WC phase including 75vol% of nano-sized WC inclusions resulted in higher microhardness and fracture toughness values which were 18.64 GPa and 6.94 MPa.m1/2 respectively.
