Abstract

In this study bioglass in the system SiO2-CaO-P2O5 was prepared and characterized. Bioglass powder was produced by the sol-gel method. The prepared bioglass powder was immersed in the simulated body fluid (SBF) for periods of up to 28 days at 310 K to investigate the bioactivity of the produced sample. Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) and Ultraviolet Spectroscopy (UV) techniques were used to detect changes in the SBF composition. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) was utilized to recognize and confirm of the formation of hydroxyapatite (HA) layer on the bioglass powder. Density and porosity values of bioglass powder were determined by using mercury porosimeter. Microstructural characterization of the bioglass sample was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Overall results revealed that the growth of carbonate hydroxyapatite (CHA) layer on the bioglass surface was formed after 14 days interaction in the SBF.
