Abstract

The performance of seams in garments is the subject of this article. The requirements for good seam performance are defined as: suitable seam strength, seam stretch, good resistance to chemical and biological attack, good colour stability, low shrinkage during washing and ironing, suitable frictional properties and suitable seam appearance. The problems which can occur affecting seams such as laddering, pucker, seam grinning, slippage and fraying are discussed.
