Abstract

In this study, the coupling mechanism in optical directional couplers is investigated. A modal analysis problem is solved instead of a canonical problem which explains the diffraction mechanism. The coupling coefficients of TE and TM modes in a pair of identical, parallel, slab, weakly guiding, lossless and bare optical fibers are calculated using the Coupled Mode Theory and Perturbation Theory.
