Abstract

In this study, the operation principle ofan optical directional coupler, which is one of the fundamental elements of an optical communication system, is analyzed. The power loss profile of a coupler is determined by considering characteristic properties of transmitted guided modes. The analysis shows that the losses due to inter-TE-modes coupling are higher than those due to inter-TM-modes coupling.
