Abstract

In this study the aerodynamic response of wings encountering vortex gusts have been investigated using experimental and computational methods. Effects of different gust parameters on wing loading are investigated for periodic vortex gusts encountering a NACA0012 wing at various angles of attack. Presented experimental results are from two different facilities and together with the computational results provide in agreement an insight into the underlying flow physics of vortex-gust encounters. On the other hand, although there are major differences between experimental and computational conditions for transient vortex gust encounter case, including wing shape, Reynolds number and gust parameters, the scaling puts forward the typical gust response.
