Abstract

The growth in the use of embedded generation operating in parallel with utility distribution systems has increased the importance of loss of grid protection. A new loss of grid protection algorithm is described in this paper which has been designed to be amenable to inclusion in a multi-function numeric protection package. In particular, it has been designed to detect reliably a loss of grid within 120 milliseconds, remain stable during other power system disturbances and demand a minimum of the processing resources of the micro-computer host relay.
