Abstract

Providing protection against islanding probably is the single most challenging aspect of designing the electrical system involved in cogeneration. For small or medium sized cogeneration, also referred to as embedded generators, operating in parallel with a utility power supply, islanding generally occurs following utility switching operations which, leave the generator connected to part of the utility's load but disconnected form the utility's main source of power. The conditions is also referred to as loss of mains or more recently as loss of grid.
