Abstract

Floods are caused by sudden rains, sudden snowmelt, and the lack of suitable cross-sections of river beds and the high slope of their routes. If the stream and river beds are not brought to the capacity to carry the flood flow, loss of life and property will occur due to the risk of flooding. In our country, many of our citizens have lost their lives and many property damage has occurred due to the flood. Due to these damages caused by floods, the need for flood protection structures is increasing. In this context, risk analysis is carried out in the regions that will be at risk in order to minimize the loss of life and property in the event of a flood and to reduce the negative effects of the flood. After the negative effects are determined in the risk analysis, the results are evaluated with the help of database and maps. Geographic Information System (GIS) applications constitute an important database in determining the relationship between urbanization and river beds. In this data system, as well as socio-economic data such as population, livestock, agriculture, data belonging to any structure can be processed. Processing water structures into GIS environment is of great importance. By processing the data into the Geographical Information Systems, the map of the regions that will be risky in the event of flooding of the land is drawn. In this study, the flood capacity of the stream bed to be arranged was investigated by using meteorological data and calculating precipitation with statistical methods. With the data obtained, flow rates with 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000-year recurrence times were calculated by Rational and Mockus methods. With these calculated flow rates, it has been tried to predict agricultural and structural damages in a flood that may occur in Ceviz and Çığır rivers. The flood protection structure that will safely pass the Q500, Q100 flood flows has been examined. With the construction of flood protection structures, future floods are prevented from causing loss of life and property.
