Abstract

A thermoelectric cooler for an electrochemical battery pack to increase the life-time of the batteries is considered. The thermoelectric cooler considered here is a pack of Peltier elements, extended Aluminium surfaces (heat sinks) and fans. An analytical model to examine the dependency of maximum cooling rate on inner and outer air temperatures is developed for various overall heat transfer coefficients of the heat sinks. Cooling rate, air flow rate and power consumption are experimentally measured besides inlet and outlet air temperatures at both cold and hot sides. Experimental and analytical results are compared to verify the analytical model. Cooling and heating capacities as well as coefficient of performance (COP) values versus current are examined. It is shown that there is an optimum electrical current which maximize the cooling rate. The dependencies of maximum cooling rate and COP values on the ratio of overall heat transfer coefficients are also investigated. Furthermore, the variations of maximum cooling rate and COP with the difference of hot and cold side air temperatures are studied.
